History
Historically known as Piazza dei Signori, the square took its present name after the death of Victor Emmanuel II in 1878. The square was repaved as part of the redesign and the monument to the king was unveiled in 1881. On the southern side stands the column with the Lion of Saint Mark, a symbol of Venetian rule, first erected in 1508 and restored in the nineteenth century.
